Obesity is a chronic medical issue that affects more than 40% of American adults. While many people mistakenly see it as a lack of willpower, this complex condition can actually cause your body to resist traditional weight loss efforts.
With over 30 years of experience in the field, Steven Patching, MD, specializes in helping patients overcome obesity through bariatric surgery. He and his team provide ongoing guidance and support during the entire process, from consultation to aftercare and beyond.
If diet and exercise aren’t producing the results you need, it might be time to consider a surgical solution. Here’s what to expect as you move through each phase of the bariatric process.
Your journey begins with a series of consultations and evaluations to ensure that bariatric surgery is the safest and most effective plan for you. These early steps focus on your overall wellness, helping you prepare for the physical and mental changes that come with weight loss.
In the weeks leading up to surgery, you follow a specific diet — typically low-calorie, high-protein — to shrink the liver and reduce abdominal fat, which lowers the risk of complications. Dr. Patching may also recommend Thorne® bariatric supplements for additional metabolic support.
As you get closer to the date, you complete final pre-admission testing, which may include a chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (EKG), and blood work, to confirm you’re ready to undergo surgery.
We offer several bariatric options, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and Lap-Band® surgery, to fit each patient’s unique health needs. Dr. Patching uses minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques to perform these procedures, which reduces post-operative pain and speeds healing time.
On the day of your surgery, you meet with the surgical team to review the final details of your plan and complete your pre-op preparation. Once you’re under anesthesia, the surgery usually takes between one and three hours to complete, depending on the specific procedure.
Most patients stay in the hospital for one or two days post-surgery while we monitor the initial stages of their recovery. We make sure you’re tolerating liquids and walking around comfortably before you head home.
As you recover, you move from a clear liquid diet to soft, pureed foods over several weeks, eventually reintroducing solid foods according to Dr. Patching’s instructions. This slow, gradual transition is essential, as eating solids too soon can result in severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or serious complications like a stomach rupture or staple line leak.
A series of follow-up appointments — typically at the 2-week, one-month, and three-month marks — allows us to track your progress, monitor your nutritional levels, and adjust your supplements to ensure you’re losing weight safely.
Our award-winning bariatric care program sets you up for success. You have access to support groups where you can connect with experts and peers, along with diet tips and resources to help you maintain your weight loss permanently.
